    Morning Conversations Empty Morning Conversations

Grace woke with a smile, feeling herself still laying against John's chest, her hair draped across him like a blanket. She laid there for a good while simply enjoying the closeness, then quietly rose to prepare herself for what promised to be a long day. John had been surprised by her offer, but not offended. That was good. They spent hours together under the full moon's light, simply enjoying being together. She knew this pleasure was fleeting as she knew he had not come to India for a pleasure trip. There was something distracting him. He seemed to try to put it from his mind, but she could see it in his eyes that part of his mind was elsewhere. She walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower to let it start heating up before going to wake him.

John had been awake for quite some time. His mind continued to go over last night. Had he done the right thing? As he felt her begin to stir, her hair draped over him, he decided that he had. Her scent was strong on him, her body warm, and last night had made them both happy for a time. He had done what his instincts told him was the right thing to do. As he felt her wake up and move, he smiled. He watched as she walked out of the room, her olive skin marked with only three small scars along her back. He had long felt guilty about those scars, and probably always would, but she had never blamed him for what had happened. He thought back to earlier times when things had been so chaotic. She had always been gentle and kind to him, but his instincts had taken over when he was injured. He had lashed out in anger when he felt someone close, thinking it was Demona come back to finish the job. Those scars would always haunt him, but he had last night given her what she wanted. They had spent the whole night together, no outside world, just them. Perhaps in some small way, that would repay her for the pain he had caused.

He heard her turn on the shower and smiled. Hearing her come back in, he closed his eyes and pretended he was still asleep. He heard her in the kitchen and smelled the herbs as she made tea. He let his mind swim through recent events and wander as he waited for her to 'wake' him.

Grace walked quietly over kneeling next to him and set the tea on the floor beside him. She let the scent of the tea do it's work in waking him and went to her shower. She knew that he would be wanting to talk today but she wanted to preserve the fantasy of them having a home together a little longer. It was a nice fantasy. As the hot water ran over her, she let her mind wander to how things could have turned out if he had never left, but smiled knowing that was not the case. He was back here, but not for the reasons she had once hoped for. Whatever haunted him needed to be discussed, and soon. The weight she could see in the way he carried himself seemed to crush him in some subtle way. She needed to know why..

After she finished her shower, she got dressed and went into the common room to wait for him. Hakim had come in while she was in the shower and laid out some sliced fruit. She silently thanked him for being prepared. She hoped his night had been as pleasant as hers had been. She picked up a slice of pear and nibbled on it while she waited for John to join her...

Quinn sat on the floor drinking the spicy tea, smiling. This was nice; life moved at a slower pace here. He knew he needed to get moving, but for some reason he was in no rush. His nose told him that there was fresh fruit in the other room, and that Grace was there. She knew he loved the smell of jasmine. He chuckled as he got up, taking his tea with him and moved to the common room to join her for breakfast. They ate in silence, neither wanting to break the spell. As the fruit on the plate dwindled, there fingertips touched more and more, causing them to look into each others eyes and smile...

He knew he needed her help and putting things off was just going to make it harder so he decided to break the silence. He looked and her, smiling.

"Grace, I think it is time I told you why I actually came. There has been a lot going on lately. I think we need to discuss some things about our past and what was done then. It is looking like the past is going to have a big effect on the future. More than either of us could have known..."

Grace looked down and smiled. How much should she tell him of what she knew? How much could she tell him of what else was going to be changing? She looked up into his eyes.

"My sweet Johnathan, I already understand what is happening. The treatment is changing you. Vincent told me what your redead had to do, and I knew it would accelerate the process, though I wish I had known the pain it would cause you. I never wanted that. You will be stronger than any vampire I have known, and bound to none of them."

She looked up to his face, pride in her eyes.

"With my help, you will be a new force to recon with in the vampire community. No longer will their petty politics be the rule of law behind the scenes! Hakim is in thrall to one of them, did you know that? That is where he goes at night...to be with HER. Once enough time has passed, your change will be complete. If you had not been so injured it would have been a slow change over many years, but your vampire mistress's blood is stronger than most. She has sped up the process. Tell me John, has it become difficult to shift yet?"

Quinn sat in stunned silence, trying to make sense of what was going on. Her hatred for vampire had to have come from somewhere, but how long had this been in motion? Had she really chanced across him or did she plan for him to be 'saved' and become something she could use? So many things were in chaos now that it was hard to see what was the truth...
