    New beginings Empty New beginings

James had been very secretive in the note he left. Only she would know where "the hilltop" was. He just hoped that she would show up. This last few weeks had been wonderful, learning about her, sharing the sunlight, making new memories. He had one other he wanted to share with her. Guiltily he thought about the first sunrise after the sun had given back to them. He had gone out away from everyone and watched the whole thing like a greedy child getting what they had dreamed of. This one he wanted to share with her. Her words to the human still stung a little. "just a friend" she had said. He hoped it was becoming more than that, but he was by her side, no matter how things turned out. As he arrived at the hilltop, he took the blanket he had brought with him and rolled it out, and sat down to wait. If she decided to come, she should be here soon.

She had gotten back from feeding with Brianna and went to find James. Without any luck, she decided on a shower. They had made a connection and maybe having her around wouldn't be so bad. She tried to sleep, she fought to...but she failed. With each toss and turn, she was wide awake and restless. The sun would be coming up soon, but she wouldn't have to hide...not anymore. Would this last forever? She hoped so.

When she went down to look for James again, figuring he'd gone out for a hunt too, she found a note instead. "Meet me at the hilltop." Was all it said. She smiled and slid the note into the pocket of her denim mini skirt and headed out to find him.

When she came upon the hill, she saw him sitting on a blanket and couldn't help but smile. Approaching closer, she finally spoke. "I got your note.."

James smiled as she walked out of the woods. He motioned for her to join him on the blanket. He glanced at his watch and smiled. Only about thirty minutes till sunrise would break the horizon. Her timing could not have been better.

"I'm glad you did. I just wanted some alone time for us, if you don't mind. I figured we could talk some more."

"No, no I don't mind at all." She smiled and took a seat next to him on the blanket. Looking over at him, she slowly moved her hair off of her shoulder.

"I looked for you earlier, didn't find you? Everything okay?"

"Yes, I just get tired of seeing sex everywhere I walk. Don't they ever get bored with it?"

He laughed softly as he looked in her eyes.

"One of the servants said you were in talking with your sister. You never mentioned having one, but I figured I would give you time with family. It is not like we have a shortage of it. I have been thinking a lot about time lately. It is surprising which memories really stick with you. I still remember the first time I saw the Beatles play in Chicago. It was their first show in America. The energy there was amazing. My sister and I had won tickets from the local radio station. We slipped out without permission and got a ride to the show with friends."

He looked out over the trees, remembering the music and smiling.

She smiled nervously, there was an awful lot of sex around. "Yeah, I um...know what you mean."

She looked down at her hands for a moment before looking back up at him when he mentioned sister. That's right, a sister...technically. "Right, about that." She looked up at him and smiled. "I was pretty shocked to learn it...Bill turned someone else." She still wasn't sure how she felt about her or the situation, but she seemed...okay. "I'm still getting used to it myself."

She listened to him speak about the Beatles, her dad used to always listen to them and sing along. She only knew a few songs. "I've heard of them, not many songs, but I know of them. They were pretty popular in the seventies. Is that when you were turned?" She asked curiously, hoping she didn't touch on a sore spot. She listened to more of his story and remembered all too well that her sneaking out without permission landed her where she was now...a vampire.

"The music spoke to you. It was amazing. Once the concert was going, we did not care about how much trouble we got in when we got home. It would be worth it. We were about half way back in the crowd but it did not matter. My sister had brought her camera and was jumping up in the air, snapping pictures. The very air was electric."

"...and to answer your question, no. It was not much after that, but that was the first time I ever met HER. She and I would meet on several occasions after that, always seemingly by chance, though now I know that was not the case..."

The way he spoke about it made her feel like she had been there. The roar of the crowd, the flash of the bulbs on old time cameras, the screams of thousands of girls. She smiled and listened to his story, feeling almost like it gave her chills.

He mentioned 'her' and she took that to be his maker. Maybe someone he didn't quite like the way he spoke of her. She decided not to probe that part of his life, it seemed sensitive. Placing a gentle hand on his arm, she looked into his eyes when he turned his head to face her. "Do you believe in chance...in fate? That things happen for a reason?" The question was out before she could stop it and she sorta wished she hadn't asked.

"Do I believe in fate? You know, I have never really given it much thought. In truth, I would have to say no. I like to think that we make our own way, our own choices. What happens as a result of those choices is the result. Is is fate? Destiny? who can say, but I like to think that if that is the case, that we are guided, then I would hope that we each can make decisions that will alter that 'fate' and allow us to find what we want in life. What do you think? Do you believe in Fate?"

He was so...fascinating. More than anyone she'd ever met. Quinn had many moments of wise words but this...was different. HE was different. Night and day from what she was used to. It used to be warm skin against her cold, now...it was the same temperature. She used to watch romantic movies and wonder what it felt like, to be skin to skin with someone who's temperature were the same as your own...now she knew.

"I--well, I don't know anymore." She looked up at the sky that was beginning to lighten with each passing minute as the sun began to peek over the horizon as if testing the day out before it rose into the sky. The mix of the colors was simply magnificent. "I thought everyone's destinies were laid out for them, I thought...there was a path. But now I think I realize you sort of make your own. Choices...it all comes down to choices. I used to fear making the wrong one, but now, I don't....I guess because if it was really wrong, I wouldn't have made it in the first place. So with me making it, I grow from it, be it good or bad."

She realized she was rambling and laughed softly, shaking her head as her hair fell down with a bounce across her shoulder. "I'm rambling again. I do that a lot. Sorry."

James smiled, leaning in and kissing her on the tip of the nose.

"don't worry about it, Jessica. I like hearing you talk. I like learning about you. It has been a long time since I let someone close enough for that."

He sat up, pulling her up next to him as the first rays began to dance across the dawn-lit sky. The wash of colors almost like some mystic painting as night and day melted together. As they watched the sun break over the edge of the sky, he smiled.

"Now every day can be a new beginning, Jessica. Every night a new chance to live. We do not have to worry about the past. The future will come no matter what we do, so why not just enjoy every moment as they come? You are the first person I have wanted to share a sunrise with in a long time. Even in my mortal years, I never did this with anyone."

She smiled and her eyes went down after he kissed her nose. Looking back up at him she nodded. "Thanks. I'm glad you do, sometimes it's hard to get me to stop. I like....learning about you too." She said and smiled brightly. "Glad it was me you let close to you."

She leaned her head back against his shoulder and watched the sun begin to rise slowly. Being so close to him, letting him hold her...it had been so long since she'd been touched like this. So long since she felt...safe. With him she did, surprising as it was to her.

With her right hand, she reached over and placed her hand on top of his left that held onto her holding her close to him. Closing her eyes for a moment, she just enjoyed the serenity of it all. Nothing but the future mattered now, she just prayed she wasn't too broken and fragile to give this a chance. Quinn still remained in her thoughts... and part of her hated him for it. The other part...longed for him. But James...filled a piece of her that was missing, a piece she hadn't really noticed was missing until he made love to her.

James felt her place her hand over his and smiled. Perhaps he could be more than a friend to her after all. She made him look forward to the next day like none had since Evie. It was hard to let anyone close anymore, but without risk, there could be no reward. He was almost glad for the Center, since without it, they would probably never have met.

"Jessica. I know you and I are both enjoying life now, but I cannot live off your father's donors forever. You mentioned having a job before. Do you think they will still hire vampires?"

The sun was half mast in the sky as the lights hit her skin and warmed it, causing her to smile and bite her bottom lip. His words made her open her eyes and turn to face him. He was independent too, which was nice to hear. She looked up at him with her head resting back against his chest and smiled "I can talk to Sam and see, I don't see why not but with all the recent hate on vampires I'm not sure I even still have a job. Sam used to hire anyone, no matter what the species. Now, I'm not sure."

She moved and turned her body to face him fully, watching the sunlight hit his face. His jaw was angled and strong, the way the light made his hair look a soft brown, his skin wasn't as pale either. Being here with him, under the warmth of the morning sun was the perfect start to a perfect day. "This...is amazing. You...are amazing."

He had closed his eyes to feel the first warm rays but opened them when she moved. He smiled as she sat there watching him. Hearing her words made him smile.

"No Jessica. I am just James..."

He motioned with his hand as the sun crawled across the landscape.

"..but yes, this is amazing. I never tire of it and treasure it every time I see it. Who knows if this new gift is permanent or not. I am going to enjoy every moment of it I can while it is here. You are welcome to join me. When we can, I do want to have you check with this 'Sam' you mentioned. Even your father's patients has limits."

He pulled her down to the blanket, climbing over her and looking in her eyes.

"Besides, unless I work, what do I really have to offer?"

He lowered himself down, kissing her softly as the sun fell across their hilltop.

"You're more than that...way more to me." She said it and pressed her lips down, knowing she shouldn't have. What were they anyway? Friends? More than that? How could she tell him she slept with him thinking it would be her only chance? But that wasn't entirely true, she felt something for him...she just didn't know what it was because so much was clouding her feelings.

She looked out at the sunrise and nodded in agreement before turning to face him again. "I'd love to join you in whatever journey this is.." She smiled as he pulled her down and climbed over her to look down into her eyes. She nervously chewed on her bottom lip and smiled more. "Yourself....and that's all I could ask for." What was happening? Really, where was this going and what was these new feelings she felt. It had been weeks since it felt like her heart beat...and here it felt like a spark of electricity jolted into her heart and warmed her body...but more than that, warmed her soul.

When he kissed her, it was soft...it was gentle. Right here, under the sun, he kissed her like a lover, not a friend. Her arms came up and her hands cupped the back of his neck, not allowing him to move. Slightly parting her lips to deepen the kiss, she felt a surplus of feelings and urges. When finally the kiss was broken and she looked up into his eyes, all she could do was nod and smile again. She had no words, nothing could describe it....it just was.
