Picking up and moving on Empty Picking up and moving on

Arlene received a call from the lawyer that was handling Terry's estate and life insurance. She'd been so blase lately and had felt like she was on auto pilot most of the time. She wanted to go back to work, get back into some sort of normal routine, whatever that was. What was normal anymore? With Terry gone, it made everything seem so...lifeless. Even the kids had felt it. Mikey was now crawling and standing up. Terry would miss his first steps. The thought brought tears to her eyes.

"Damn it Terry!" She said as she wiped the smear of mascara from under her eye, caused by her tears that fell. She blew out a breath and gave up on it. She sniffled and stood, grabbing her keys and purse and heading out for her meeting.

"Adilyn are you positive you don't mind watching Mikey? I won't be long I swear."

"Go on aunt Arlene, we'll be okay. I'm sure, now go." She gave a warm smile and Arlene smiled back, relieved. She nodded and turned, quickly stopping and turning back to walk up to Mikey in Adilyn's arms and kissed his forehead. "Mama will be right back okay baby? You be good!" She turned and left the house, ready to face the day. It was time to start picking up the pieces, wasn't it?

When she arrived at Broussard and Miller law firm, she sat in her car for a bit before finally getting out the car. Her talk with Terry still in her mind. She was furious with him for planning all this and not telling her, not that it would have helped any. Getting out the car, she closed the door and fixed her tunic shirt, placing her purse strap on her shoulder and heading inside.

"Mrs. Bellefleur, I'm glad you could make it." Kevin Broussard said to her after she had been led into his office for their meeting.

"I uh...I'm glad you called, although I don't know what it is that you needed?"

"Please, have a seat Mrs. Bellefleur." She nodded and took a seat across from his desk. He looked down at some paper work and began to shift through it all. "It appears that Mr. Bellefleur named you solely as his beneficiary to his estate and life insurance to the sum of two million dollars as well as his military benefits. You and the kids will be very well taken care of, however there were some discrepancies."

Arlene frowned. "Discrepancies? What do you mean?"

"Well, it appears Mr. Bellefleur took out the policy three days before he was killed. Now the insurance company has contacted me in reference to this matter. They will be conducting their own investigation into it, it's policy. Unfortunately, they will not release the funds until it is found to be mere coincidence and not foul play."

She felt like she had been punched. Until all this was sorted, all she was getting was his military benefits and that wasn't much. The VA had been helpful, but the bills needed to be paid. She'd have to get back to work and quick. Nodding, she looked down at her lap. "They think I did this?"

"Of course not Mrs. Bellefleur, it's policy and procedure they must follow because of how close his death was to the date of the policy."

"I-I understand. How long can this take?"

"It can take as long as a few months or as little as a few weeks. I will be in touch and we will get this matter resolved. I assure you, Mrs. Bellefleur, you are in good hands." He smiled to reassure her and she sighed softly with a nod and forced a smile.

"Okay, I trust you. We'll get through this." She felt the tears well in her eyes and continued to smile so she wouldn't break down in the office. All of it felt like too much, just way too much.
