Grand Opening (2023) Empty Grand Opening (2023)

James looked over his speech and smiled. This was so exciting. He had never dreamed he could move things this far forward. As he stepped to the podium, the crowd fell silent. He saw a lot of faces he knew, but just as many or more that he did not. He tapped the microphone and smiled at the echo.

“Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. I am very happy that you were able to join us here tonight for the grand opening of the St. Croix Botanical Gardens. This is a landmark in equality for all kinds as it is the only twenty four hour botanical garden complex in the world. We have specially designed this garden flower by flower and plant by plant for optimum vitality and variety.  I believe in letting the gardens speak for themselves, so let’s get to it, shall we?”

He smiled as he took the oversized shears from his assistant and moved to the ribbon. He paused with the shears open around the ribbon for pictures, and then cut the ribbon cleanly in two. He handed the shears back to his assistant and pushed a button on the podium, opening the double glass doors so that everyone could enjoy the gardens. He watches proudly as the crowd wove their way through the paths, pausing and commenting here and there.

Everything was going perfectly. He sometimes thought of Jessica and how much he would have liked to have her here, but she had her own life to live, her own dream to follow. He had to make sure to send her the clipping from the gala. He knew she would be happy to see it when she had the time.
