Arabella watched as Jonathan left the house for his run. She smiled and called a messenger. She locked the messenger's eyes a moment and spoke softly.
"You will follow my instructions to the letter, do you understand?"
The young man whispered, "...understand..." and nodded.
"You will deliver this to William Compton's estate discreetly. It is to be placed into his hands only. Once you have delivered the letter, you will go somewhere you commonly go and forget that you and I spoke and forget about delivering the letter. Do you understand?"
The young man nodded as he looked down at the sealed letter on the table.
As he left the house, she prayed Jonathan didn't notice. She hated going behind his back, but she had a future to think about as well. If this letter did the job she hoped it would, then she would have a foothold into the politics in the region, even if only a small one. She thought quietly as the taillights faded down the road, and turned to go back to her rooms, only to find Cassia standing there.
"What was that all about?"
"Just sending out a private letter."
"What's with all the cloak & dagger talk? Jonathan would have taken care of it for you."
Arabella smirked as she walked to Cassia, whispering in her ear.
"not this one, he wouldn't. Now, why don't we go back in and find some way to distract ourselves for a while."
Cassia gave her an impish grin and almost tugged her back into their rooms.
